NEW CASTLE —
I don't know about you, but Thanksgiving is my favorite time of year.
I love the excuse to stuff my face from early in the morning to late at night and spend time with my family. This year I'll be in Italy on my honeymoon over Thanksgiving, and we plan on celebrating with pasta and vino this year rather than turkey and stuffing. (Side note: do you know what they call Thanksgiving in Italy? Thursday. I've been telling that "joke" to anyone that will listen to me.)
Every year I get the urge to just give up and wear sweatpants on Thanksgiving because, let's face it, at the end of the day after all that food, you just need an elastic waistband. But I'm here to help you think of a few other options so that you can still look cute during the festivities but be comfortable.
One of my favorite options? A jersey maxi dress. Jersey is a stretchy material that almost feels like a T-shirt — so, in other words, super comfortable.
It'll stretch with you and they pretty much always look chic. Wear it with a belt around your natural waist during the day to emphasize your shape (and feel free to remove it after your third slice of pumpkin pie). If you wear it with a fun printed scarf (like leopard print), it'll elevate the look even more.
And no need to wear sky-high heels. Choose pretty ballet flats with an interesting detail and settle in to feast.
Next option: skinny jeans. Now, I realize this might sound counter-intuitive, but skinny jeans are meant to stretch. I realize that the idea of something tight on your body that day sounds crazy, but if you're wearing a cozy, oversized sweater on top, it starts to sound a bit better, right?
Especially if you try out a poncho — it's basically like wearing a blanket during the day and getting away with it. Toss your favorite cozy scarf on (to be used as a pillow once the tryptophan kicks in) and riding boots and the turkey stands no chance.
Finally, combine the previous two. Wear a pretty, fall-colored maxi skirt with an oversized graphic sweatshirt. It keeps you looking interesting while being insanely comfortable.
The finishing touch? A pair of spiked loafers, so that your Great-Aunt Alice will know that the final buttery roll is yours and you aren't to be messed with.
If you'll notice in each outfit to the right, I've kept all of the accessories to a bare minimum so that you aren't bogged down with heavy jewelry, but if you want to personalize each look a bit more, add in interesting bracelets or a great oversized watch.
What is your favorite thing to wear for Thanksgiving? And by the way, if you eat a bit extra this year, just tell everyone it's for "Sarah the fashion blogger" since I will be in Italy.
No one can judge you for that.
