Sarah Stright-Hartley: How to be cute — and comfortable — for Thanksgiving

NEW CASTLE — My favorite holiday is right around the corner — Thanksgiving.

I love this holiday for many reasons, but mainly because it revolves around food, and being thankful for your life, but mostly FOOD! We spend a lot of time traveling for the holiday because our family is all back in the Toledo area so it isn't quite as relaxing as I often hope but either way, it's a time to get together with your family without the pressure of gift giving (I'm looking at you, Christmas).

When deciding what to wear each Thanksgiving, my first question is often, "how far will my pants stretch?" Because everyone knows you can't just have one helping of food on Thanksgiving. Because I’m pregnant, I have the extra excuse of "I need more food, the baby is hungry.” I plan to take full advantage of that. I feel I keep going off on a tangent thinking of food, so let's come back to the point — what to wear.

I always look for something that is comfortable but still cute. To the right, I've put together three looks for different types of Thanksgiving gatherings. The first one is my personal favorite. I love a big, comfy sweater in a fun print. Paired with sweater leggings and knee-high suede boots, it makes you look like you actually put effort into your outfit without really having to do so.

The second look is if you're going to a more dressed-up affair. I love a velvet dress this time of year. But to keep the comfortable, room-to-eat air going, I chose a dress that has a higher waistline and then flows out from there. This way it hides the post-dinner belly. Wearing a blazer will keep you warm and cute t-strap heels feel fancy with the dress.

Finally, if you're just having a low-key, intimate dinner at home, why not try something a little more "fun" and go for patterned leggings. In plaid and tribal print, these leggings are everywhere right now. I also love the idea of a silly novelty sweatshirt like the "gobble gobble" one to the right.  Comfortable sneakers are all you need to complete the look. Slippers will do just fine, too.

So what type of dinner will you be going to this year?
