NEW CASTLE — Originally, she was to have arrived today.
Then doctors changed the date to Dec. 31.
Giada Llewellyn decided for herself to be born at 12:21 a.m. Jan. 1 in Horizon’ Hospital in Farrell, making her the first baby born in Mercer County in 2014, the hospital said.
Both baby and mom – Nila Sims of New Castle – are doing fine. Also a daughter of Michael Llewellyn, Giada weighed in at 7 pounds, 3 ounces, and measured 19 1/2 inches long.
Yesterday afternoon, Sims said she initially thought Giada would be born closer to Christmas.
“That was my grandfather’s birthday,’’ Sims said. “I began to have some signs she was on her way then, but it never happened.’’
Sims saw her obstetrician Tuesday and was scheduled for another appointment next week. Later in the day, she began to have mild contractions but still decided to attend a church service as planned.
After the service and a nice meal, Sims said, “I began to feel quite uncomfortable. It got progressively worse through the night.’’
Sims’ mother and sister were with her as Giada arrived early in the new year. Both mom and baby were expected to be released from the hospital last night.
