Sarah Stright-Hartley: Practical for the cold, snow — and stylish, to boot

NEW CASTLE — Baby, it's cold outside.

But if you've lived in the area long enough, you're probably pretty used to it — even if it doesn't make it any nicer to deal with.

One thing I can't stand is having cold, wet feet throughout the day, so this year I actually invested in boots to wear in the snow (only took me 30 years — I call that progress). Throughout the years I've avoided buying snow boots since I could never find any that were all that stylish. Granted, I know that isn't the point, but if you can find stylish ones that are also warm then wouldn't that be better?

Yes, yes it would.

Lately stores have been offering much better options that not only work while you're outside, but they can also be worn throughout the day as opposed to changing out of them once you arrive at your destination — meaning no more carrying two pairs of shoes. So if you're looking for a casual day boot alternative to footwear that will keep you warm and look stylish (and intentional), check out the options to the right.

My personal preference is a great pair of rain boots — that way you can use them during the snow and during the rain, spring and winter. I love a tall, bright pair that are perfect for wearing with skinny jeans and a cute sweater. With a great coat and coordinating accessories, this is a perfect daytime look.

The next two options I've shown are your typical snow boots. I still like a taller pair — for both aesthetic and practical reasons. I like that the details on both of these pairs are subtle and the colors can be worn with virtually any look. In the second outfit I went for a plaid shirt with light skinny jeans to contrast the dark boots. The vest is easy over the shirt and the complementary accessories are cute and warm.

In the last look, I went for an ultra casual look. A cropped sweater (cropped shirts are still very much "in," even in winter), green skinny jeans and a fur hooded parka (in a different shade of green than the jeans) look really great with a leopard print scarf and leather gloves.

All of these looks are meant to be worn in a casual environment — not to the office, unless you work somewhere casual. But just think of how much cuter your off-duty looks can now be! Do you own snow boots?

Do you remember being told, “don’t play with your food” when you were a child?  Or maybe you’ve said this to your own children or grandchildren. I’ve heard stories about kids slipping food under the table to the dog or stuffing Brussels sprouts into their pockets to get out of the pain of eating them.
