Defendant waives hearing in motorcyclist's death

NEW CASTLE — A Volant woman waived her right to a preliminary hearing in a homicide by vehicle case Wednesday.

Laura E. Gargiulo, 42, of 2662 State Route 956, is charged in the death of Daniel E. Gallatin, 68, of Scott Township.

Police said Gargiulo struck Gallatin May 7 while he was attempting to make a turn on his motorcycle on Route 956 in Hickory Township.

A preliminary hearing for Gargiulo was scheduled Wednesday in Lawrence County Central Court. However, she waived the hearing so charges will proceed to common pleas court.

She is facing charges of homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, texting while driving, careless driving, aggravated assault by vehicle and accidents involving damage to an attended vehicle.

Milwaukee catcher Martin Maldonado has been suspended five games for sucker punching Pittsburgh’s Travis Snider during a bench clearing brawl on Sunday. You OK with that suspension?

Yes. Seems fair.
No. Baseball NEVER gets it right in these situations. Should have been at least 20 games for his sucker punch into a pile of players.
Not sure, but I’d love to see baseball be like hockey and allow two guys to fight for a while before breaking it up. Let’s see how tough Maldonado is then.
