New Castle News names new publisher

NEW CASTLE — Larry Corvi believes in hometown newspapers.

And to prove it, he’s returning close to home to operate one.

Corvi, 59, has been named publisher of the New Castle News. He comes to The News from the Muskogee Phoenix, where he has worked in that capacity since 1992. The Phoenix is a 14,000 circulation daily newspaper located in Muskogee, Okla.

He will replace former News publisher Max Thomson, who retired in May.

The announcement was made Monday by Ron Gutierrez, vice president-division manager for Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., central and western divisions.

Corvi grew up in Yorkville, Ohio, a town of about 1,250 people along the Ohio River, not far from Wheeling W.Va. His wife of nearly 34 years, Andrea, is from Cleveland, and the two began dating while undergrads at Ohio University.

“I feel like I’m coming home,” Corvi said yesterday while meeting staff members at The News. “I grew up about 80 miles from here in a very similar community. I’m excited to be coming back.”

Corvi earned a bachelor of science degree in journalism from Ohio University, graduating cum laude in 1974.

He began his career in newspapers in 1975 at the Greensburg Tribune Review and rose to his first publisher’s position in 1988, while with Gannett newspapers.

Corvi will now be closer to family and longtime friends, but that’s not the only reason he’s thrilled about moving back to his roots.

“I think there’s a great deal of potential here,” he said of the Lawrence County area. “I know the people here, I know their values — this part of the country has a lot of the potential that is untapped. Having lived elsewhere, I’m amazed that we haven’t capitalized more.”

Gutierrez interviewed several candidates for the position and said Corvi’s experience made him an obvious choice.

“I’m very pleased that we have a person of Larry’s caliber. His newspaper pedigree will help our division and help the community further our newspaper goals here,” Gutierrez noted. “The markets he’s worked in and the experience he’s gained put him head and shoulders over the other candidates.”

During Corvi’s 18-year tenure in Muskogee, The Phoenix was honored on eight occasions for excellence in Oklahoma newspapers with a circulation of more than 9,000.

While visiting with New Castle News personnel on Monday, he shared his passion for serving a community through the written word — whether delivered in a daily newspaper or through other platforms.

“Community newspapers play an important role. We shine the light on community issues that need to be addressed, and we encourage our readers to respond,” he said.

“And now is an exciting time to be in our profession. We have many more ways to communicate with our readers and advertisers, including mobile devices.”

Corvi has been active in Muskogee, serving on numerous boards, and is excited about the prospect of partnering with the Lawrence County business community. He will officially begin his duties in New Castle on Oct. 25.

Away from the office, Corvi enjoys golf, reading, model trains and being with his grandchildren, who are relocating to the Cleveland area.

“My wife and I have to pinch ourselves every day and ask, ‘Are things really working out this well for us?’ ”

Perhaps you really can go home again.

And Larry Corvi can’t wait to find out.
